Dear shelley,

Our BIKE IT! Commuter Challenge is going strong! Thank you for getting out and riding this month – and if you're not already taking part, I encourage you to join us and track your bicycle commuter miles to help LMB hit our goal of 20,000 miles in the month of September.

I'm writing today to ask for your help. As you've probably heard, changes in the no-fault insurance law went into effect earlier this summer. These have some pretty serious implications for bicyclists who are injured in crashes, especially those who don't carry car insurance or those hit by an uninsured (or underinsured) driver. Over 1,100 bicyclists were injured in Michigan last year, and unfortunately some crash injuries require long-term care. Medical bills can add up quickly, and injured bicyclists and their families may face medical bankruptcy or denial of needed care.

LMB is supporting a bill in the Michigan House of Representatives that addresses this issue. HB 5934 amends the no-fault auto insurance law to protect bicyclists. Uninsured bicyclists would have guaranteed access to the Assigned Claims Plan, and could rely on it for medical care, rehabilitation, and wage loss protection if they had a serious traumatic injury from a car crash.

With a limited number of session days left before the end of the year, we hope to see HB 5934 brought up for a hearing. We need your help to contact representatives and let them know how important this is.
